Age Advice: 9 - 11

Skin into Rainbows by Maya Chowdhry is a play commissioned and produced by Theatre Centre and first toured in 1999.

Kumkum Carpenter’s got lots of questions. Answers don’t come so easily. Ina few days she’ll be 12 – and it’s not just her present she can’t decide on. Why is she different? Who are the missing people in a past she cannot grasp? What is the danger she senses?

She enters Virtual-Reality. The Life-Control-Mother stones glow. 2064 becomes 1999.

Sameer Kumar is planting seeds, Dolly Kumar is baking. Into the garden wanders a girl who seems to know them. She wants to talk about uncomfortable things: about their daughter, Firdows; about the Millennium Bug; about why she’s seen Sameer in a dream.

Zurrah, her care-consultant, summons Kumkum back. Virtual-Reality Memory-Fields are highly unpredictable. Kumkum gets angry. Are the answers staring at her? Is she asking the right questions?

Skin into Rainbows is the story of how Kumkum discovers who she really us. A thriller sweeping through past, present and future, examining notions of race, identity, culture, heritage and possibility.
