Familiar Feelings

Age Advice: 4-7

Familiar Feelings is a play written by Noel Greig for Theatre Centre. It was written in 1988 and it toured to schools for audiences aged 4 to 7.

“What I had for breakfast today was eggs and _ _ _ _ _”

Kanta is learning to read and write. She is a quick learner, but is stumped by this one. Kanta often had eggs for breakfast but “eggs and _ _ _ _ _”, that was something strange and not a familiar phrase at all!

For Mr Gradgrind, the answer is obvious. Eggs go with bacon just as neat goes with tidy, wealth goes with glory, nice with quiet and so on…It’s all very straightforward, but is it? When the Victorian world of Mr Gradgrind meets with the contemporary world of Kanta, both find out that there are many answers to any single question.
