Breaking Chains

by David Holmon

1984

Age Advice: 9 - 13

Breaking Chains is a play written for Theatre Centre by David Holman. It was written in 1984 and toured to schools for audiences aged 9 to 13.

This is the story of a boy named Juan who has moved from Spain to England and started a new school. When the students find out where he’s from, they make adjusting to the new environment very difficult. Judy, a girl in class he meets, also turns out to be Argentinian but hides it and recommends he does the same as ‘they don’t take kindly to people from there’. This play gives an insight into what it’s like to come from another background and the problems you can sometimes face with people who fear change and difference.
