A Shrewd Woman

by Geoff Bullen

1979

Age Advice: 14 - 18

A Shrewd Woman is a play written by Geoff Bullen for Theatre Centre in 1979. It was written to examine violence against women, by using Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”. Bullen’s play was aimed at 14 to 18 year olds.

There are those who regard Shakespeare’s play ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ as an evil reinforcement of male supremacy. How true is this? Was Shakespeare a sexist? Are the classics relevant today? ‘A Shrewd Woman’ uses Shakespeare’s text to clarify the characters, situations and issues, by examining them in the context of a woman’s in society today.

The production brings together two women, centuries  apart, trapped in a male-structured world. Will they “kneel for peace” or “offer war” ?
