ROY WILLIAMS OBE

Playwright

"I first worked at Theatre Centre as an actor, but writing was always my true passion. I just did not know how to start. The company ran a writers' group in the evening, and I was invited to join. Also, I learned a lot about playwriting from the writers who wrote plays with the company such as Noel Greig and Lin Coghlan. Theatre Centre was the first place that showed me I could be a writer and gave me the belief that I had something to say. Today, the plays I see by Theatre Centre are fantastic, by some great writers. If I was watching them in a school, I would be so excited about what theatre can say to me. Theatre Centre remains important to me as a writer as I have the chance to speak with young people through theatre, and I want to see Theatre Centre give many more writers the chance to stretch their craft and experience the amazing energy of young audiences in school, the same as it gave me."

Actor

"Theatre Centre was an important stepping stone at the beginning of my career, giving me my first professional acting role in The Day the Waters Came (2012). I learnt how to work well with all kinds of people as we toured the country, building my strength and stamina. Theatre Centre remains a vital link for young actors into the theatre industry and lets young people who want to act see that working as an artist is an achievable dream, whoever you are."
