by Geoff Bullen
Age advice: 9-13
Chairperson was a play written for Theatre Centre by Geoff Bullen in 1981. It toured schools, to audiences of 9 to 13 year olds.
Dudley, an intelligent and cheerful 14 year old, is confined to a wheelchair. He attends a special school for the disabled, spending the holidays at home. As the summer vacation draws to an end, however, he refuses to return, pleading his right to a 'normal' education at the nearby comprehensive. Trouble! The local school is "not designed for wheelies". Will he be accepted by the other children? More importantly, must father and sister make even more sacrifices to care for him full-time? Dudley's determination to be treated fairly throws everything into confusion. But, at the last moment all is resolved happily enough as Dudley himself makes the first moves towards his goal.
