Graduate Producer Internship
Theatre in Schools Graduate Producer Internship
“Theatre Centre… defies clichés.” The Guardian
Founded in 1953, Theatre Centre is a pioneer in theatre practice and remains a leading commissioner of new writing for young audiences. We are passionate about the development of theatre made specifically for and with children and young people. As part of our plans to encourage more and better theatre in schools, we are piloting a new scheme to address the lack of emerging producers entering our sector. We believe in paid opportunities for those starting out in their careers and relevant learning experiences that improve ongoing employment prospects.
The Theatre in Schools (TiS) Graduate Producer will form part of our Splash Initiative next spring 2019, working as part of a small creative team and Theatre Centre staff to support a creative process in a primary school. They will act as Producer to the lead artist, helping realise ideas co-created with pupils and their teachers. The role will be offered on a freelance contract but have the dedicated support and guidance from Theatre Centre’s skilled staff team including our Participation Producer, Artistic Director and Executive Director. We are looking for someone who has graduated (within the last 2 years) from a BA/MA Applied Theatre/Performance course, or vocational performance-based course with some knowledge and experience of theatre in schools, education or community settings. We will also consider applications from people who are not graduates from such courses, but who can, instead, evidence experience and dedication to pursuing a career in socially engaged theatre/arts. The successful candidate will already know they want to produce engaging theatre or creative projects but not already had a professional opportunity to explore how they could apply their skills to working with, and for, children and young people in schools.
What does the Theatre in Schools Graduate Producer Internship offer?
- A paid, freelance position as a graduate producer with Theatre Centre for approximately 2 months, part-time, between/across February and April 2019.
- Access to Theatre Centre’s Artistic Director, Executive Director and staff team for advice and guidance throughout, plus one-to-one line management and mentoring from the Executive Director.
- An expenses budget to cover the costs of travel, accommodation and subsistence when required to work away from base.
- Hands on experience of working closely with, and for, an artistic team on a live artist-focused project.
- A dedicated learning and action plan created with Theatre Centre, incorporating the graduate producer’s career needs and wants beyond the scheme.
The TiS Graduate Producer will be required to travel to a school outside of London, and base themselves in London for part of the scheme to spend time in the Theatre Centre office. However, we actively encourage applications from those who live outside of London and for whom financial barriers would normally limit their ability to take up such opportunities. Expenses to cover or contribute to travel and accommodation within and out of London will form part of the financial remuneration for the position.
